Across the United States, cities and towns are becoming home to people from every corner of the globe. Languages once heard only on distant mission trips are now spoken in apartment complexes, grocery stores, schools, and workplaces. For generations, Christians have prayed, given, and gone to reach the nations. Today, in God’s providence, the nations are arriving on our doorstep.
In one American city, an influx of refugees over the past two decades created a unique opportunity. Families arrived with little more than the clothes they carried, many unable to speak English, navigating an unfamiliar culture while trying to build a new life. The needs were immediate and overwhelming: transportation, jobs, food, paperwork, education.
What happened next? Christians stepped up.
They gave rides. They shared meals. They helped families figure out bus routes and job applications. They sat in living rooms where no common language was spoken and found ways to communicate. And, most importantly, they shared the gospel.
People who formerly had no knowledge of the gospel began gathering together to worship Jesus in their own languages. New leaders emerged. Churches sprang up and entire communities were transformed by the gospel—all because people cared enough to share it.
At Chick, we are seeing increasing requests for gospel tracts in languages beyond English and Spanish—Burmese, Arabic, Swahili, Nepali, and many more—shipped to addresses here in the United States. Behind each order is someone who realizes that the nations are here. The person they pass on the street, work beside, or greet at a store may come from a place where the gospel is rarely heard—and they have the opportunity to give it to them.
For many Christians, missions has felt like something reserved for the few: those called to go, trained to serve, and sent across oceans. But for many of us, the assignment is much closer.
Our mission field can be the break room at work or the family that just moved in down the street. It could be the cashier with an unfamiliar accent or the parents at our child’s school who speak another language.
Reaching the world for the gospel is as simple as:
Carrying Chick tracts in a few different languages.
Offering a smile and a tract when the opportunity arises.
Showing kindness and walking through open doors.
It’s easy to look at the spiritual state of our culture and feel discouraged. But this is a moment of opportunity. Never before have so many people from so many nations been within reach of everyday Christians.
We may never board a plane for a distant country, but now we don’t have to. The nations are here. We pass them every day. So, take the next step. Carry the message, hand someone a tract, and trust God with the rest.
